The FMS Music Boosters serve many functions. If you have a student in the FMS music program (band, orchestra, choir) then you are already a booster by supporting your student in their efforts in playing an instrument or singing.
The FMS Music Boosters is a group of parents who support the vocal, band and orchestra programs at Ferndale Middle School.
One of the main functions of the Boosters is to provide help when needed as well as organize fundraising efforts. Last year, a number of band parents were very involved in moving instruments, music and such to the new building and helping organize things once there. Although the school district handles teacher salaries and other operational expenses, the Boosters help with a lot of items the district doesn’t cover.
Over the past couple years, the Boosters have raised money for:
- sheet music
- private lessons
- solo and ensemble fees
- miscellaneous equipment (mouthpieces and bows, for example)
The Boosters also provide ‘people-power’ at concerts, festivals, and other events for set up, ushering, and cleanup.
The 2003/04 school year offers us a number of additional challenges, such as additional fix-ups in the new facilities (sound-proofing in the Orchestra Room, for example), underwriting accompanists for the various festivals, and new ‘uniforms’ for the bands/orchestras/choirs.
We’re also trying to spearhead a drive to obtain a first-class sound system for the FMS and FHS music departments, which can be used at various functions such as the 9/11 Remembrance or All-City Concerts. This is no small issue—bids for the system have been over $10,000.00. Our major fundraising event each year is Tag Day, usually held in mid-May.
We’d love to have your assistance, whether it be in the form of a donation of time or a donation of money or—better yet—by participating in one of our FMS Music Booster meetings.
Our next FMS Music Booster Meeting is Thursday, October 16th, 2003 at 7:00 PM, in Mr. Jamison’s Band Room.
