Mr. Roger Smith, Director of Bands Director of Orchestra Director of Vocal Music |
|
|
Roger Smith is a home-grown product of the Ferndale School system having gone to Roosevelt Elementary, Lincoln Junior High and Ferndale High School where he graduated in 1974. While in high school, Smith participated in all aspects of the bands, orchestras and, as a senior, the choirs. Wayne State University was his home for the next four years as he played trombone in the band, orchestra and sang in the Men`s Glee Club and Chamber Singers. Smith`s initial graduate work while still at WSU was in choral conducting as the assistant conductor on three European tours. His first public school teaching gig was at Avondale High School. Following that, Madison Junior High in Pontiac was his next job where in addition to teaching band and orchestra he also taught 8th grade English (yikes!) Then, in 1983, came the offer for the Ferndale job. Smith (similar to "Welcome Back Kotter") was home again. Twenty one years later, the job is still a labor of love (most days). Great kids, parents, faculty and a fantastic, patient wife have made it the best job in the world (well, maybe professional golf, hmm). |
